Locke Throw Free Crochet Blanket Pattern

The Locke Throw crochet pattern is a easy free blanket pattern worked from corner to corner using basic stitches. This is a great project to sit back and relax with because the repeat is nice and easy.

I designed the Locke Throw free crochet blanket pattern when I was fairly sick. You know when you’re not feeling well enough to do much but sitting and doing nothing is so boring? I knew I had to rest but I needed something to do with my hands. I’m pretty sure most crocheters can relate to that and since I was under the weather I knew I had to keep it simple.

If you didn’t know I am a King Cole Yarn ambassador. A few months ago they sent me a huge box of yarns (see the unboxing here) and in that box was a few skeins of their new Safari Chunky yarn. A soon as I saw it I was intrigued. It’s a long striping yarn with smaller stripes of blank. I knew I had to make something so I ordered more. While I’m really proud of how the Locke Throw design came out let’s be honest, the real star here is the yarn.

King Cole Safari (100% premium acrylic; 311yds/150g; bulky weight)

7 balls in the shade Wilderness

Hook

K/6.5 mm hook (or hook to obtain gauge)

Abbreviations

Ch = chain

St = stitch

Sc = single crochet

Hdc = Half double crochet

sc2tog = single crochet 2 together

Notes

This throw will be worked from corner to corner in a diagonal fashion.
The size of this throw can easily be adjusted by working more rows of the increase to make it larger (or less to make it smaller). Keep in mind this will change the yardage needed

Gauge

13 st by 15 rows in pattern = 4” square (blocked)

Gauge Pattern

Ch an odd number

Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn.

Row 2-3: ch 1, sc in each st, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, *hdc, slip st; repeat from * across, turn.

Rows 5-7: Repeat row 2

Row 8: Repeat row 4

Repeat rows 5-8 to desired length

Instructions

Increase Rows

Ch 2

Row 1 (rs) – 2 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, turn. -2

Row 2 – Ch 1, 2 sc in each st, turn. -4

Row 3 – Ch 1, 2 sc, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2 sc in the last, turn. -6

Row 4 – Ch 1, *hdc, slip st; repeat from * across, turn.

Rows 5-7 – repeat row 3. -12

Row 8 – Repeat row 4

Repeat rows 5-8 for a total of 128 rows.

You can place a stitch marker on the first and last st of the last row to mark the corner.

At this point the sides of your throw should be around 50” you can work more or less repeats of the 4 rows to make it larger or smaller.

Decrease Rows

Rows 1-3 – Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog, turn.

Row 4 – Repeat row 4 of the Increase Rows.

Repeat rows 1-4 until 6 stitches remain.

Row 125 – Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog, turn.. -4

Row 126 – Ch 1, 2 sc2tog, turn. -2

Row 127 – Ch 1, sc2tog. -1

Do NOT fasten off.

Finishing (Boarder)

Round 1 – Ch 1, evenly sc around the entire blanket adding 3 sc to each corner, join to the first sc.

Round 2 – Ch 1, sc in every sc adding 3 sc to each corner, join to the first sc. Fasten off.
