Topelt Shawl Free Crochet Pattern

The construction of the Topelt Shawl Free Crochet Pattern is simple and a great intro to working short rows. First, the trim is made then the body of the shawl is added by working in short rows.

The shawl is extra long and almost scarf-like. This makes it easy to wrap and keep on. It’s also very versatile because you can wear it several different ways. Let it drape like a normal shawl or wrap it round and round to look more like a cowl.

2 hanks of KT and the Squid Squid Sport in Caroline (300m/328yds per 100gm/hank)

J/6mm hook (or hook to obtain gauge)

H/5mm hook (or a hook 1mm smaller than the gauge hook)

Please read all instructions before beginning.

To begin the shawl, you will first work the trim. The body will then be worked into the sides of the trim in short rows.

Bottom Trim

With the smaller hook, ch 10.

Row 1: Sc in the 2^nd ch from hook, ch 5, skip 4 chs, sc in the next ch, ch 3, skip 2 chs, sc in the last ch. (3 sc, 1 ch-5 space, 1 ch-3 space)

Row 2: Ch 4, turn, sc in the 1^st ch-3 space, ch 3, 6 dc in the ch-5 space, dc in the last sc. (7 dc, 1 sc, 1 ch-3 space, 1 ch-4 space)

Row 3: Ch 5, turn, sc in the 5^th dc, ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 space, ch 3, sc in the last ch-4 space. (3 sc, 2 ch-3 spaces, 1 ch-5 space)

Row 4: Ch 4, turn, (sc in the next ch-3 space, ch 3) twice, 7 dc in the ch-5 space. (7 dc, 2 sc, 2 ch-3 spaces, 1 ch-4 space)

Row 5: Ch 5, turn, sc in the 5^th dc, (ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 space) twice, ch 3, sc in the last ch-4 space. (4 sc, 3 ch-3 spaces, 1 ch-5 space)

Row 6: Ch 4, turn, (sc in the next ch-3 space, ch 3) 3 times, 7 dc in the last ch-5 space. (7 dc, 3 sc, 3 ch-3 spaces, 1 ch-4 space)

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1^st 7 dc, ch 5, skip the next ch-3 space, (sc in the next ch- 3 space, ch 3) twice, sc in the last ch-4 space. (10 sc, 2 ch-3 spaces, 1 ch-5 space)

Row 8: Ch 4, turn, sc in the 1^st ch-3 space, ch 3, skip the next ch-3 space, 7 dc in the ch-5 space. (7 dc, 1 sc, 1 ch-3 space, 1 ch-4 space)

Repeat rows 3-8, 40 more times.

Repeat rows 3-7 one more time.

Do NOT fasten off.

Shawl Body

Start working with the larger hook.

Row 1: Ch 1, working in the side of the rows of the bottom trim, sc once in the end of each row. (253)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1^st 173. (173)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1^st 93. (93)

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st of the previous row, sc in the next 4 sts of row 1. (97)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st of the previous row, sc in the next 4 sts of row 2. (101)

Rows 6-31: Repeat rows 4 and 5. (205)

*You should have 24 unworked sts on either side.

Row 32: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st of the previous row, sc in the next 6 sts of row 1. (211)

Row 33: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st of the previous row, sc in the next 6 sts of row 2. (217)

Rows 34-38: Repeat rows 32 and 33. (247)

Fasten off, you will have 6 unworked sts of row 2.
