Initial Thoughts

Superwash Highland Sock Twist (that’s a mouthful!) is a part of Craftsy’s new exclusive line of yarns from Cloudborn Fibers. It comes in several rich colors as well as a fun variegated yarn called Highland Superwash Sock Twist Hand-Paints.

Like the description says this yarn is 80% highland wool and 20% polyamide. Highland wool is a wool that comes from a certain sheep and it’s super strong. Polyamide is an interesting fiber. It’s fire resistant, water resistant, lightweight and strong. These properties are great for socks!

I really love the heather look of the color I received. It’s soft and really adds to the texture of the yarn. It’s a 2 ply yarn with a medium twist. If you were to look at the cross section of the yarn it would be nice and round. This tells me it will have decent stitch definition and nice texture.

When you untwist the yarn then let go it springs back nicely. This spring back will translate into the finished fabric which means you wont end up with socks that stretch out and fall down because that would be annoying!

How it Works up

I balled the whole hank and found no knots or any other weirdness (technical term). The yarn was very consistent throughout. Great quality!

I did feel like it was a bit fiddly to work with at first but that’s mainly because I don’t use a lot of sock yarns. Once I got into a good rhythm it was really nice to work with. The twist is tight enough that even though my needled were pointy I didn’t have many issues with splitting.

Obviously this yarn was designed for socks but I really think it would be perfect for lace work as well. One of the great characteristics of 2 ply yarns is that it wants to be lacy and open. I think it’s gorgeous!

You can also see the lovely texture. Purl bumps pop out and the crochet stitches are nice and plump. The polyamire in the yarn also gives it amazing drape without being heavy. It also has great elasticity. When you pull on the fabric it springs back really nicely.

I love how the yarn blocked. I was able to really open up the stitches. You could have a lot of fun playing with some intricate lace patterns. It would make a beautiful shawl!

Durability

I washed this swatch 5 times and rubbed it together in between each wash. I decided to throw it in the dryer once because I know that’s something I’d do by accident.

I think this yarn looks great after washing/wearing. I do see a slight halo forming but I actually like it. It makes the fabric look and feel so soft! I do think there’s a slight loss in color but very minimal. I still love the color as well.

If you make socks they’ll see quite a bit of wear and I personally think this yarn will hold up to it!

Pattern Ideas

Socks! Go nuts with socks! Pick a pattern with beautiful stitches and texture to really highlight the yarn. I personally would also love to see this yarn in a lacy shawl or wrap. It feels amazing against the skin so it will be great for anything you can wrap around you.

Conclusion

This yarn holds up to it’s name. Superwash Highland Sock Twist would be perfect for socks with beautiful stitch definition, warmth and durability. Venture outside the box with open lacy shawls and you wont be disappointed!
