A few years ago I tried my had at a rag rug. I made my yarn out of some knit fabric I found on clearance and just made a simple circle rug. It turned out pretty nice and my dog loved it. I never really thought of making anything else besides rugs with recycled fabric yarn so when I saw Big Hook Rag Crochet: 25 Quick-Stitch Designs to Make Using Leftover Fabric by my friend Dedri Uys I got really excited!

Big Hook Rag Crochet is a paperback book full of 25 designs from 15 designers. The whole book is really nicely done with bright, colorful photographs of each design and clear easy to read patterns. At first glace of the book I could tell it was packed with useful tips and tricks for working with fabric yarn.

When my book arrived it was during a storm and the power was out. My two kids (6 and 4) had a blast reading it with a flashlight. It kept them entertained for quite a while, haha! They got a big kick out of the Cozy Cat Cave by Erin Black.

If you’re not too sure how to make fabric yarn don’t worry at all! At the back of the book there’s a wonderfully written techniques section. It goes over the basics of getting started, hooks and gauge, how to cut and join the yarn (I found this especially useful), starting to crochet, increasing and decreasing, special stitches, working in the round and changing color. These tutorials make this book very beginner friendly.

My two absolute favorite designs in the book are the Fox Draft Stopper and the Owl Doorstop by Nguyen Le. I think both designs are creative and useful at the same time.

I also really enjoyed the Statement Necklace by Dorothy Wood. I would have NEVER thought to use fabric yarn for a necklace. It’s beautiful!

You can see the rest of the designs HERE on Ravelry.
