I don’t think I can express in words how much I absolutely adore this sweater! I’m so excited for the release and I hope you all love it too.

Crochet pullover pattern by KT and the Squid

This sweater design is something that’s been rolling around in my head for a while. I often take inspiration from clothing I see and this time it was taken from my very own closet. Basically, it’s what I imagine it would look like if two of my favorite sweaters got together and had a beautiful baby. One sweater is a hoodie that I wear almost everyday (as long as it’s clean) even though it’s actually a maternity sweater. What I love about it is that it’s nice and long and has a wide trim. I think it hides my post baby belly quite well. Plus, it’s really comfortable. The other sweater is sporty fleece thing that has a playful cowl neck and drawstring.

In terms of the pattern and wear-ability I think this design has the best of both worlds. While some patterns are easy to make they may not be very practical to wear and while others are easy to wear they may not be so easy to make. My Favorite Crochet Pullover is so simple. It’s constructed all in one piece from the top down with absolutely no seaming at all. The special stitch I used is what puts it over the top for me. With some crochet stitches you end up with a thicker fabric which isn’t always flattering (especially when done with worsted weight yarn) but this one thins out the fabric wonderfully which help hug the body without adding too much bulk!

While I could see a beginner making with pattern without many issues, you do need to have some basic pattern reading skills. I have provided links to videos for almost every stitch or technique used though. If you’re a little more advanced you should had no trouble customizing some of the fit as well.

My Favorite Crochet Pullover is available in two different patterns. One for girls and one for women. While I did design it with girl’s in mind, I personally think it would be great for boys as well.

Girl’s sizes: 21″(23″, 25″, 26″, 28″) chest. Finished chest: 23″(25″, 27″, 28″, 30″)

Women’s sizes: 28″(32″, 36″, 40″, 44″, 52″) bust. Finished bust: 30″(34″, 38″, 42″, 46″, 54″)

The sweater is designed to have 2″ of ease. My bust is 34″ and I’m wearing size 32″ and the girl’s size is made in size 23″ with the models chest measuring 22″. If you’d like a looser or tighter fit you can easily go up or down a size.

For my samples I used Lion Brand Heartland. I highly recommend this yarn. It’s absolutely perfect for this pattern.

Lion Brand Heartland Yarn – $4.80

Retail Price: $6.00
You Save: $1.20

Lion Brand Heartland Tweeds Yarn – $5.19

Retail Price: $6.49
You Save: $1.30

For girl’s sizes you’ll need 2(2, 2, 3, 3) balls of the main color and 1 ball of the contrasting color.

For women’s sizes you’ll need 3(4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6) balls of the main color and 1(1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2) balls of the contrasting color.

You will also need an I hook (or hook to obtain gauge), 2 wood beads (I got a little bag at a local craft store for $1), and at least 1 stitch marker (you can use a scrap piece of yarn). If you need, you can use 4 stitch markers when working the yoke as well. They are not required but may be helpful.

    SOLD!
I’m really excited for this pattern – I’m going to make one for myself, and one for my son!
I’ve never crocheted a sweater before (only knit), so i’m really excited!

    Hi!

I love the sweater! I have been wanting to make a sweater for ages now but I am so nervous. Don’t know why. I am going to work on making this one very soon.

    Thanks,
    Maria

  • Cate

    Congratulations!!!
Like you, I have a cotton knit sweater just like this (minus the lovely ribbing) and I love it! The neckline is flattering and practical. Now, I only like to use 100% wool or cotton. Do you think I could do your pattern with cotton and would it be 8ply or 10ply? Do you think it would work with wool? In Australia our yarn is named differently so I will google a bit to find out non acrylic equivalents Lion Brand Heartland unless you can help?
    Excited to try this!

Just loaded this but my links to the info on the stitches do not work. Can you give me an address where I can see these? Thanks. It looks like a wonderful sweater to me!

    SOLD *does happy dance*.

I just love this <3 I adore the style and how you've combined the style of two great tops. It looks fantastic and I'm really excited about making one for me :D. Think I may have to wait several months till I have the time and money for the materials but it will be worth it.

Thanks for the great discount, I'm in the UK and I got this for under £1. What a bargain!!!

I was also so happy to see I was able to get the discount, as I buy on Ravelry and due to the new rule changes I'm running into lots of problems of not being able to buy some patterns from my favourite designers. I was so happy and relieved that I didn't have this problem with you. If you did anything to sort this out for buyers like me, thank you!

Again gorgeous pattern. I love it and can't wait till I can make one for me!

    Rosie 🙂

Sorry, me again. I wanted to ask you something :).

I’m a Vegan so generally I use cotton or cotton blends (my favourite being cotton and bamboo), occasionally I’ll use acrylic. Anyway my point is I don’t use wool, no animal fibres. I was thinking of making this with cotton but I see someone else asked this question and you said it would give it more drape and make it heavier. I wondered, do you think it might work with cotton or a cotton blend if I went down a yarn weight? So DK yarn weight instead, by the way I’m from the UK if that makes a different in yarn weight.

Any advice would be great, thank you :).

      • ktandthesquid

        Thanks so much Rosie!
I really think it depends on the cotton…Not sure what you have in the UK but come of the cheaper cottons here are really heavy but there are some nicer ones that are really soft ad light. I think a cotton blend would work wonderfully. My suggestion would be to work up a gauge swatch and see how the fabric feels. Also, make sure to block the swatch to see how much it might stretch. I’ve had cottons grow (a lot) on me before.

I love this pattern and I’ve been looking for a new project, thank you!
Can I ask what colours of yarn you used?

When you measure your bust, do you measure underneath or around? I’ve never attempted clothing before so sorry if it’s a stupid question!

    • ktandthesquid

So glad you love it 🙂
Not a stupid question at all! Measure at the fullest part of your bust. There is also a schematic at the end of the pattern with finished measurements. I like to measure articles of clothing in my closet to compare. That way you can pick a size that will fit the way you like.
      Thanks!

    I love this pattern!
I’m in the UK so I’ve been looking at lion Brand wool online. Did you use Black Canyon or Great Smokey Mountains for your main colour? It’s so hard to tell from swatch pictures online! Thanks!

  • Jo Schreibeis

Why oh why couldn’t you have made something ugly??!! Lol
I just promised myself not to purchase anymore patterns, … and then I saw your fantastic sweater pattern!!! And I bought both the adult and child sizes!!
Thank you for your wonderful work with this pattern!! Cannot wait to make them!!!

  • Christina Rose

First off, I LOVE this pattern. I’m making it for my daughter now and she cannot wait to wear it! However, I’ve just finished the body and am about to start the ribbing on the bottom and the sleeves, and it’s way too small! Perhaps this is because I tend to do tight stitches. Since this is my first time making a sweater, could you give me some advice on how you blocked yours (I’ve read about wet blocking and dry blocking using an iron…) and how much I can expect it to stretch once the blocking is finished? I’m hoping it will stretch enough for my daughter to be comfortable in it — she tried it on, and while it “fits,” it is skin-tight. Thanks so much for your help!

    • ktandthesquid

      Hey Christina,
It really depends on what yarn you used. Mine grew a little in length but not a lot. For acrylic I use a little steam from the iron but the stretch came after wearing the garment. Ideally, you should have done all this on your gauge swatch too see how the yarn behaves… I like to pin my swatch out and seam it to see how it stretches.
Is it something you can fix by adding more length? If so I’d do that, if not you may need to start over with a larger hook 🙁

Hello. Beautiful pullover. I am thinking of purchasing your pattern. I was wondering what range the sizes are ie: xs to 3x. It is hard when people tell you they are xl and no measurements. This would nake it eaier since my grandkids live far away from me. Thank you so much.

    • ktandthesquid

Hey Maria, I do have a list of bust measurements right on this post 😉
      ” Girl’s sizes: 21″(23″, 25″, 26″, 28″) chest.

If you’d like a looser or tighter fit you can easily go up or down a size.”

    Hello KT!
I’ve just finished my pullover for my daughter and she absolutely loves it! Wonderful pattern. Thanks again. 🙂

  • Dawn

I’ve been look for nice modern sweater for myself for ages. I always make for other people, but now, I’m going to make something just for me! Thank you so much, can’t wait to get started.

  • theresa

i love your pictures for this pull over and can’t wait to get started. should the yoke fit over my head easily and rest on my shoulders around my neck…..this is my first top I have tried making.

  • Wendy B

Hi I just started the kids one for my daughter. Got a couple rounds in and it clearly won’t fit over her head making size 6 so it would be oversized. Any guesses as to what I might be doing wrong? Oh and my gauge is on for the swatch.

      • Wendy B

It was my mistake I didn’t read it right and did a regular starting chain. Love the FSC ! I am a few rows past the split for sleeve. It’s coming together quick and the stitch looks great. I am so happy this will be my first garnet!

  • Steph Scotton

Hi! I bought this pattern, and started working on it, but I have questions. The contact me link on your page seems to be broken. I’ve requested to join the Facebook group, too. Is there a good way to contact you about specifics that you may not want public for those who haven’t purchased the pattern?

    • ktandthesquid

Hey Steph! I think I just got your questions on Ravelry. That’s a pretty good place. Sorry, the questions from the contact page weren’t getting to me so I took it down. I’ll try to replace the link with some better options 🙂

  • Brittany Oveson

Hi, i just downloaded this and i recieved 2 womens patterns as well as the girls. im wondering what the difference is on the womens v2. the photos used are the same. thanks!

    • ktandthesquid

      Hey Brittany!
V2 has some larger arm holes. Some people felt the arm holes were bit too small in the original but several people thought they were just right so I offered both versions. If you’re not sure which one is best look at the schematic and compare the arm opening measurement to some clothes you have in your closet.

  • Alicia

I am having trouble with the “splitting” for th arms. I am not understanding. Can you help explain that to me? I am a first timer when it comes to sweaters lol. Thank you!!!

  • Beverly Russell

I purchased the pattern. It appears relatively easy to convert for left handed crocheting. However, are there specific instructions or points that you have for doing this project for lefties?

    • ktandthesquid

      Hey Beverly!
Its all in the round so and the same direction so I don’t think there’s anything that should confuse you. The trim of the cowl goes a certain direction but I think I noted the left hand direction in the stitch definition.
Feel free to reach out if you need help. I do have a left handed tester and I’m pretty sure she’s made at least one of them ?
